As a nation, we are now finally confronting the gun violence issue head on and we are being led by the youth of these United States.
This issue is not new to me. When I was on City Council in Asbury Park, the gun violence issue was front and center in our community. In 2006 alone, we had over 75 shootings and 6 murders.
I am heartened by the fact that this issue is now being discussed with such passion in the mainstream. Back then, the cries of mostly black and brown, poor, marginalized voices who were being terrorized by gun violence were not being heard. I am hopeful that with the national spotlight now on this issue in such a significant way that everyone impacted by gun violence will get the justice they deserve – a safe, gun-violence-free community.
To futher the goal of making our communities more safe, I will:
- Never take campaign money from the NRA.
- Fight to protect NJ's gun safety laws which are some of the best in the nation.
- Fight for federal legislation that is in line with NJ's laws and fight back against any legislation that will weaken our strong common sense gun laws. (ex. Concealed Carry Reciprocity)
- Support legislative initiatives from grassroots gun safety organizations like - Moms Demand Action, the Brady Campaign, and Everytown for Gun Safety.
There is some low hanging fruit which I will fight to enact in Congress, including: universal background checks, closing the gun-show and private sale loophole, outlawing bumpstocks and limiting magazine size, banning sales of semi-automatic assault rifles and supporting federal legislation on gun violence protection orders.
